INDONESIA, FAST GROWING ECONOMY, NEEDS TO STRENGHTEN ITS LEGAL SECTOR

As one of the biggest economies in Asia, Indonesia has been showing its escalating importance to the world economy in recent years. After elevating to be a middle-income country, Indonesia steadily grows at more than five percent a year. However, the country needs to overcome some fundamental handicaps to grow faster. “Legal  sector is one of them. In this sector, Indonesia as a country and its business entities need to be more aligned and compatible to the international world.” says Meggy Parengkuan. She adds that the lawyers can play this role by providing legal services and advisory to business sector to improve their practices: “We can do it, for instance to assist private sector to respond to unprecedented needs to comply to human rights and social as well as environment standards”.

The current global economy has arrived at a point where companies are pressured by the market to meet global standards of corporate law and corporate governance and report transparently about their sustainable practices. Human rights and social compliance is a powerful strategy for conducting business in a sustainable manner, legitimizing a business or becoming a social license for a company to operate.

“In recent years, we have seen a growing understanding among companies that recognizing human rights risks in their local operating environments is one of the most important steps in ensuring company compliance, good practices and, as a result, doing business sustainably. As an international law firm, Marccus Partners has a strength and commitment to show its leadership in this arena,” says Marzuki Darusman, Senior Advisor for Mazars Asia Pacific and Marccus Partners.
